Successful Board Meetings

by Sridhar Ramanathan

boardroom.jpgGetting skewered and scorched in a board meeting seems almost a badge of honor for entrepreneurs/executives especially here in Silicon Valley. I’ve certainly learned the hard way myself on what works and what doesn’t. Perhaps some lessons are best learned that way but I sure wish I had these two fantastic resources back in b-school.

Guy Kawaski’s The Art of the Board Meeting

Brad Feld’s Board of Directors; The Agenda

The top ten takeaways for me were:

1. Publish a well written agenda beforehand
2. Avoid surprises and pre-sell the board members in advance
3. Meet in the morning
4. Allot time for important topics
5. Pay attention to the detail-- all of them
6. Admit it when you don’t know and get back to them
7. Focus on just a few issues/topics
8. Let the CEO run the show
9. Present solutions, not questions
10. Use the board members
